Popular Photography Magazine – March 1941

From China

Extremes in age present interesting pictorial opportunities. Francis Wu, Hong Kong, China, used soft studio lighting to bring out the roundness of his young subject’s face. For the opposite effect, he photographed the aged woman outdoors.

These two fine pictures by Francis Wu were made with a 3 ¼ by 4 ¼ Graflex Model B Camera and Kodak Anastigmat f4.5 lens. “A Daughter of China” was taken indoors. One 500-watt lamp was used for lightning the subject and the exposure was 1/10 sec. at f4.5 on Eastman Portrait Pan Film

The second picture, which Wu has called “The Happy One”, was taken outdoors on a rainy day when the light was diffused. The exposure was 1/300 sec .at f5.6 on Ektachrome Super XX film.
