FRANCIS WU (1911-1989)

Francis Wu was born in Canton, China in a village called Buck Toy. He was educated in Honolulu, Hawaii and graduated in high honors ranking the first in his class of  graduates.

Mr. Wu was interested in photography since he was 9 years old. In high school, he was the art editor of the school newspaper and year book. In 1931, Mr. Wu returned to China and attended Linnan University.

In the 30’s, while in China, Mr. Wu traveled , studied and experimented on photography in the modern Chinese Art way. He also studied the Chinese way of thinking in the form of expression of their inner desire thru delicate tones and more gradation while a few dared to produce a picture that as bold, abstract and strong in character.

In the 30’s, Mr. Wu moved to Hong Kong and lived  and worked there. He remained during World War II with his sister and mother, while his family was evacuated to Hawaii. After the war, He was assigned the official photographer of the Hong Kong government, and the official photographer for the Hong Kong governor and was often invited to attend different governor’s functions.

In 1945 Mr. Wu opened his studio in Hong Kong . He also had a branch studio with 20 staff members. Mr. Wu had his own photo magazine with him as the editor in chief. He also have published photography books. He have helped and established different Camrera Clubs and organizations and maintains as one of the top ambitions the spreading of photography among the Chinese and making Hong Kong being recognized as a top ranking in the art of photography in the world.

In 1953, Mr. Wu had a one man exhibition in the Smithsonian Institute Of Art in Washington, and he was invited  to have many other one man shows around the world.
